How to Call India from the USA in 2026: +91 Dialling Guide

To call India from the USA, use +91 followed by the recipient's full national number. On a US phone line that requires an international exit code, dial 011 91 instead. For an ordinary mobile, use the ten-digit mobile number; for a landline, include the area code and subscriber number without the domestic trunk 0.

Fonable is a browser-native, pay-as-you-go international calling service. It fits calls to supported ordinary Indian landlines or mobiles when you want to use a laptop or phone browser. You still need internet access, microphone permission and calling credits.

How do Indian mobile and landline numbers differ?

A mobile needs no separate city code. A landline needs its area code, sometimes labelled an STD code, and the subscriber number. For ordinary landlines, the area code and subscriber number together make ten digits.

These incomplete patterns cannot be dialled. For a landline, A means area-code digits and S means subscriber-number digits; together they represent the ten-digit national number.

Contact detailsInternational formatWhat to check
Ten-digit mobile: XXXXXXXXXX+91 XXXXXXXXXXDo not add a landline area code
Domestic landline: 0 + area code + subscriber+91 A… S…Remove the trunk 0; keep the area code
+91 followed by a national numberKeep +91 onceDo not add 011 to a plus-format number

What does an STD code mean for a landline call?

In Indian contact details, an STD code often includes the domestic trunk prefix 0 followed by the area code. That initial 0 is for domestic dialling. For the international number, retain the area code but leave out the trunk prefix.

If a business gives only its local subscriber number, ask for the full +91 number or check its official contact page. Keep an office extension for the keypad prompt after the main line connects.

How to call an Indian number from a US browser

Choose the contact route before adding credit. For a delivery, appointment or supplier enquiry, have the relevant reference ready so the recipient can find the correct record.

  1. 1. Identify the line. Check whether the recipient has supplied a mobile, ordinary landline, toll-free service number or short code. Use a published international contact route when available.
  2. 2. Write the +91 version. Keep all ten mobile digits. For a landline, include the full area code and subscriber number without the domestic trunk 0. Avoid duplicating an existing +91.
  3. 3. Check destination pricing. Review India rates and the number type on the rates page. Check your credit balance and allow for the likely conversation or queue duration.
  4. 4. Prepare browser audio. Sign in, allow microphone access, and select a microphone and speaker you can hear clearly. Keep the browser open for the call and use a stable connection.
  5. 5. Place the call. Dial the main number, then use keypad tones for menus or extensions when prompted. End the call when you finish; keep any follow-up reference the business gives you.

Can you call an Indian 1800 number from the USA?

An Indian toll-free or domestic service number needs a separate reachability check. Adding +91 does not prove that a US carrier or browser service supports that prefix, and a domestic 'free' label does not establish your international calling cost.

For a bank, airline or delivery company, look for an overseas contact number on its official website or inside its app. If only a short code or domestic service number is listed, ask for an ordinary international contact number. Do not assume a normal India rate applies to every special-number category.

When should you call a person or office in India?

Check the local time in the Indian city and in your own US city for the date you intend to call. The USA has several time zones, and daylight-saving changes can alter the gap. A convenient afternoon in California may be outside an Indian office's working hours.

For supplier calls, use a calendar showing each participant's local time. Check customer-service hours separately from branch hours. For family calls, agree on a time by message before starting a paid call.

What should you do if the number does not connect?

Recheck the distinction between a local landline number and a complete national number. A missing area code, an extra trunk 0 after +91 or a duplicated country code can stop the call. Compare the entered digits with the recipient's own published contact details.

If the number is complete, check coverage and whether the line is domestic-only. Investigate before repeating paid attempts. Request another number through the company's official overseas contact route or contact form. For audio problems, check browser microphone permission and the selected speaker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I call an Indian mobile from the USA?

Enter +91 followed by the ten-digit mobile number in a dialer that accepts plus-format numbers. On a US line requiring an international exit code, use 011 91 followed by those same digits. Do not add a separate city code or a domestic trunk zero to the mobile number.

Do I include the zero in an Indian landline STD code?

Remove the domestic trunk 0 when converting a landline to international format, but retain the area code and subscriber number. If the contact gives only a local subscriber number, ask for the full international number. A separate extension belongs after the main phone number has connected.

Can Fonable call an Indian bank's toll-free number?

A country's ordinary calling coverage does not confirm support for every toll-free or special prefix. Check the specific number before calling. Use the bank's official overseas contact details or ask for a regular international landline. This guide does not promise Fonable routing or free calls to Indian toll-free numbers.
